In today’s article, we’ll talk about sci-fi movies based on science. They might not be 100% accurate, but most of their scientific information is correct. However, they’re shot wonderfully, the actors are brilliant, and the plot is amazing, so they should definitely be on your must-watch list.

1. Alien (1979)
There have been a lot of talks and comments about aliens and UFOs in the last few decades, and while we have no idea if extraterrestrial creatures do exist or not, we can still see them in some of the most marvelous sci-fi movies that are based on science.
One of these incredible cinematographic productions is the 1979 movie “Alien” directed by the talented Ridley Scott. If you didn’t watch this, you probably heard the famous tagline “In space, no one can hear you scream”, making it one of the creepiest and most famous quotes in this sci-fi horror movie that’s from outer space.
The plot is wonderful and is about the crew of the Nostromo ship, who come into contact with a hostile alien species. It’s all about time there, and humans have to do everything they can to avoid the horror problems or fight the alien for their lives.
In general, spaceships are presented as stylish, minimalistic, and sleek, but the Nostromo is nothing like this; in fact, it is heavy, cramped, and ugly. The reason why cinematographic enthusiasts say that “Alien” is one of the movies that are based on science is that if space travel becomes available, it will probably have this practical and real look, especially if we talk about a commercial towing vehicle.
Moreover, putting the crew in suspended animation is also a more common and scientifically workable practice for exciting but long-distance travel compared to faster-than-light.

2. Minority Report (2002)
If you crave some action and something that will make you glued to the TV, these sci-fi movies that are based on science are exactly what you need. “Minority Report” is a 2002 film released and directed by Steven Spielberg. It is based on the 1956 short story of the same name by renowned sci-fi writer Phillip K. Dick.
“Minority Report” is a marvelous movie in which Tom Cruise is going to impress you with his talent, and besides the actors’ performances, what’s great about this cinematographic production is that it has been farsighted about the direction modern society was moving towards, and that says something.
The plot is focused on “precogs”, meaning humans who have the impressive psychic ability to anticipate murders before they happen, and the Precrime Unit, which is centered on arresting people based on the information they receive from precogs.
Everything changes, and this cinematographic production is going to blow your mind when the character John Anderton (Tom Cruise), who’s the chief of the Precrime Unit, gets into trouble due to the fact that the precogs foresee that he would murder someone.
It’s true that there aren’t any clairvoyant children in our world, but we can’t deny that “Minority Report” is one of the sci-fi movies that are based on science. In one scene, Mrs. Anderton is in a driverless car during a powerful action scene, a technology that we can’t say we didn’t see in today’s modern society.
Another example was the existence of fully automated homes controlled by the sound of one person’s voice, which again, a lot of individuals have. But the thing that impressed the world the most was the fact that the movie showed some extreme surveillance scenes, and if we really think about it, that’s something we see in reality too, mainly due to cameras, the Internet, and smartphones.

3. Gattaca (1997)
We continue our series of sci-fi movies that are based on science by talking a bit about “Gattaca”, a film directed by Andrew Niccol and released in 1997. This spectacular film illustrates people’s anxieties that technological progress will eventually make scientists play God, as the characters can genetically screen every single child for things like diseases, defects, and future potential.

4. Interstellar (2014)
“Interstellar”, a movie directed by Christopher Nolan and released in 2014, is another one of these incredible sci-fi movies based on science. At the time of the premiere, people had different thoughts about the movie: some said that it was one of the most wonderful sci-fi films ever made, while others said that the scientific pieces that it was based on were truly impressive.
The plot revolves around Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a former NASA pilot who leads a team of brave astronauts on a journey to discover a suitable planet to live on.
The crew was required to check out three potential new homes, each with its own set of complications, as their beloved Earth is quickly becoming uninhabitable.
Many of these sci-fi movies that are based on science have far-out elements, but “Interstellar” took it to the next level. Peculiar features, like time dilation and wormholes, might seem like great imagination products, but they have some theoretical physics basis.
For instance, the black hole is an incredibly detailed and authentic visual portrayal of how light would bend inside of it. This phenomenon is known as gravitational lensing, and depending on your access angle, a bright halo could form around it.
This movie is one of the best when it comes to scientific accuracy and that’s thanks to Kip Thorne, who was the executive producer and scientific consultant of the team. But the thing that made “Interstellar” so wonderful and Mr. Thorne such a good fit for the job is that he’s a Nobel Laureate and a theoretical physicist.

5. The Martian (2015)
“The Martian”, directed by Ridley Scott and released in 2015, is the last of these sci-fi movies that are based on science that we’re going to talk about in today’s article. How is it possible to cope not only with a challenging climate but also with loneliness?
Well, you can learn from astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), a man who gets hit by debris during a dangerous evacuation mission and becomes helpless on the surface of Mars.
While he’s there all alone, with no one to talk to or make him feel better, he has to learn how to survive. For that, he only uses his wits and some occasional communications with a NASA crew.
The astronaut uses human feces as fertilizer for the foreign Martian soil, and he grows potatoes with it (what’s impressive about this is that NASA researchers were capable of successfully reproducing under severe conditions similar to those on Mars).
“The Martian” is without a doubt one of the best sci-fi movies that are based on science, and there are many other accurate moments presented in the film, such as when Mark builds a shelter for himself or when he synthesizes water, and let’s not forget about the life-saving rocket.
